Not so long ago, 26 months to be exact, exactly half the Big 12 teams were led by the greatest coach in that particular school’s history. Or at least a coach who was in the conversation.
Kansas State’s Bill Snyder, undeniable. Baylor’s Art Briles, undeniable. TCU’s Gary Patterson, undeniable. OSU’s Mike Gundy, virtually undeniable. OU’s Bob Stoops, well, Bud Wilkinson and Barry Switzer might carry the day, but at that point OU already had commissioned a statue. Let’s put it that way.
But now, Briles is gone in infamy, and Stoop is gone in glory. That leaves only 30 percent of the league’s teams coached by the greatest in school history.
