Berry Tramel: Will redshirts be given a four-game reprieve?

College football players have five seasons to complete their four seasons of eligibility. Some have advocated for years to give athletes five years of eligibility and just omit the concept of redshirting or injury hardships.

Now the American Football Coaches Association has forwarded to the NCAA a proposal that splits the baby down the middle. The rule would allow players to participate in up to four games a season without compromising their redshirt season.

It's not as player-friendly as five seasons of eligibility. But it's a start.

The benefits are many to players and coaches.

For coaches, depth would be enhanced.
