SPRINGDALE, Ark. — After winning the last two Burlsworth Trophies, Baker Mayfield is coming home from the Northwest Arkansas Convention Center empty-handed.
Washington State quarterback Luke Falk won the award after being a finalist with Mayfield the two previous years.
"Thanks Baker for letting me win this one," Falk said with a laugh. "I guess third time is the charm."
The award, which is given in memory of former Arkansas walk-on Brandon Burlsworth, honors college football’s most outstanding player who began his career as a walk-on. Burlsworth eventually became an All-American lineman and was killed in a car accident just 11 days after being taken by the Colts in the 1999 NFL Draft.
