In football season, you’re supposed to go to Iowa to find cool weather early in the year, cold weather late.
But one of the hottest games I’ve ever experienced was the 1997 OSU season opener, when the Cowboys beat Iowa State 21-14 on Aug. 30.
That was the game that ushered in the new pressbox at Jack Trice Stadium. Iowa State had renovated its facility and moved the pressbox from the mid-level to the top of the seats.
The new pressbox did not have air-conditioning. And like most modern pressboxes, the windows mostly didn’t open. The temperature that day got into the 90s, and there was scant air flow.
