The Oklahoma Sooners gave QB Trevor Knight a full release from his scholarship Thursday. That will allow Knight to transfer any school he wants, including Big 12 programs.
Knight lost his starting job to former walk-on Baker Mayfield, who had an incredible season for the Sooners. Knight completed 22 of 40 passes for 305 yards, 2 TDs and 2 picks this year.
Knight is best known for his incredible effort in the 2014 Sugar Bowl. Knight completed 32 of 44 passes for 348 yards and one pick in a 45-31 victory over Alabama.
After that game, expectations for Knight and Oklahoma were high in 2014. Knight struggled during his sophomore season as the Sooners posted a disappointing 8-5 season. He completed just 56.6 percent of his passes for 2,300 yards, 14 TDs and 12 picks. He added 339 yards on the ground with five scores. He sat out the final three games of the season after suffering a scary injury. He returned for the bowl game, which the Sooners lost 40-6. It was the last game Knight started for OU, as Mayfield took the starting job and lead Oklahoma to a 11-1 record and a College Football Playoff berth.

Knight is just a junior, but is expected to be a graduate transfer. That will allow him to play right away and not sit out a season. The news was first reported by Rivals.com.
Knight is expected to take his time making his decision and doesn't want to be a distraction as the Sooners' prep for their College Football Playoff game against the Clemson Tigers on New Year's Eve. There's also a chance Knight will elect to stay at Oklahoma, although he'll likely have a chance to start at several schools next year. Head coach Bob Stoops told ESPN's Joe Schad that Knight's transfer is not complete or final.
Rivals.com reports Knight has already spoken with Georgia and Oregon, among others, about transferring. Kansas State could also be a potential destination, especially since he's not barred from transferring to Big 12 schools.
