The Oklahoma Sooners led by as many as 14 and were up 13 at the half, and held on for a 85-81 win over the VCU Rams. The No. 2 seeded Sooners withstood a rally from the No. 10 Rams and punched a ticket to the Sweet 16.
VCU actually held a 67-66 lead with seven minutes to play, but the Sooners went on a 9-0 run that the Rams couldn't recover from. VCU made it a three-point game late, but OU hit enough free throws to pick up the win.
Buddy Hield started slowly, but found his game en route to a 36-point, seven-rebound effort. He simply took over the game late and had 29 second-half points. Isaiah Cousins added 15 and Jordan Woodard added 17 for the Sooners.
It was a two-man show for VCU on offense. Melvin Johnson had 23 points and JeQuan Lewis had 22 points, nine assists and four rebounds. The duo was a combined 18 of 37 from the field. The rest of the team was 12 of 29.
The Sooners advance to Sweet 16, but do not know their opponent. They'll get the winner of the Texas A&M/Northern Iowa matchup later Sunday.
