The landscape of the Big 12 Conference is rapidly changing as schools are exiting right and left. It’s only a matter of time before the University of Oklahoma decides it’s better off – academically, competitively and financially – in the Pac-12, Big Ten or Southeastern Conference.
What remains to be seen, however, is whether the inevitable dispansion of the Big 12 Conference will impact one of the greatest rivalries in college football.
Is it possible that this year’s match-up between the Sooners and the Longhorns could be the last?
Oklahoma head football coach Bob Stoops seems to think so.
“I don't think it's necessary to keep the OU/Texas game if we do move out of a conference with Texas,” Stoops said. “I know no one wants to hear that, but things change. If it changes, you've got to change with it.”
Since 1900, the Red River Rivalry has become one of the most eagerly anticipated games of the year. You could even make an case that the game, which takes place at the Cotton Bowl in Dallas each season, is more anticipated than those with in-state rivals Oklahoma State and Texas A&M.
The University of Texas leads the head-to-head series 58-41-5, having won four of the last six contests. The Longhorns’ recent success, though, has nothing to do with the way Stoops feels about the situation itself.
“I love the game, but if it doesn't work out we will find other places to play and get excited about,” he said.
Although forfeiting a rivalry such as Oklahoma and Texas seems unlikely, one must keep in mind that Oklahoma and Nebraska parted ways not too long ago, Stoops said.
“All the sudden we weren't playing Nebraska anymore, but we are still here,” he said. “Life goes on. You find other rivalries and other places to go and enjoy the game and enjoy the experience. Whatever happens we will adjust to it.”
No matter what conference OU chooses to align itself with in the coming days, or weeks, Stoops will support the administration’s decision.
“I am leaving that up to Joe Castiglione and David Boren,” he said. “Whatever conference they choose, I am in.”
