Oklahoma Sooners quarterback Landry Jones and wide receiver Ryan Broyles appeared on ESPN’s First Take program Friday morning as part of the network’s famous “car wash,” which showcases coaches and athletes on a variety of media platforms, including television, radio and the Internet. Here is what Jones and Broyles had to say.
Jones’ Heisman Trophy candidacy:
“It’s an honor for people picking me to win the Heisman (Trophy) and that sort of stuff, but for me, kind of keep a level head about everything and try to just take that in as just an honor and then go out there and perform on the field.” – Landry Jones
Dealing with the pressure to perform this season:
“I feel like there’s pressure just going to the University of Oklahoma more than anything. We’re always a team to beat, not matter if we have a good year or a down year. I feel like we’re one of the best teams in the Big 12 and teams are looking out to beat us. So the pressure, it’s there, but you kind of just tunnel it a different way.” – Ryan Broyles
Broyles’ decision to stay in school:
“I feel like we have a great bunch coming back this year – a lot of starters coming back – and I feel like we can produce in a way that we’re used to doing. And on top of that, school, I have one class left to graduate and I’ll be the first of my family to walk the stage so that will be a great thing for myself and my family.” – Ryan Broyles
What Jones learned during the 2009 season:
“You know that BYU game, Sam (Bradford) gets hurt, I get thrown in and I think that whole year just taught me how important it is to prepare before games. It taught me how important it is to watch film and really know your opponent.” – Landry Jones
What Jones learned from former OU quarterback Sam Bradford:
“I remember in games when Sam was hurt, he’d always tell me ‘Get yourself in a rhythm, take your check-downs, if something’s not there necessarily down the field take the shorter route and get yourself into the rhythm of the game.’” – Landry Jones
Comparing Broyles’ in-game chemistry with Jones and Bradford:
“I feel like they’re both great quarterbacks led by a great coach in coach (Josh) Heupel and I feel like our scheme puts guys in place to do big things, but as for me and Landry, I feel like we see the field the same.” – Ryan Broyles
On their mission trip to Haiti following the earthquake:
“That was probably one of the greatest things I’ve ever done in my life… Actually, the year before, the OU women’s basketball team went and they had a couple spots extra and they asked us to go so we went down there, served Christ together and there’s nothing like going down there to serve the Lord with your teammates.” – Landry Jones
