Kansas State and Oklahoma both got out to fast starts in the game, trading touchdowns throughout the first half. A couple of turnovers by the Sooners led to a 21-17 lead at the break for the Wildcats, who extended that lead in the second.
Oklahoma finally caught up with them in the third quarter and tied the game at 24, but then the defenses on each side took over. Only one more touchdown was scored by each side, but the Wildcats blocked OU's extra point and were able to hold on for the victory.
Turning Point: Oklahoma was trailing 31-30 with 3:53 left in the game, and failed to punch the ball into the end zone on a 3rd & goal. Head coach Bob Stoops decided to settle for a 19-yard field goal to take the lead, but kicker Michael Hunnicutt pulled the kick wide left.
Key Stat: Hunnicutt, who's considered to be one of the best kickers in the country finished the game just 1-3 on field goals and had an extra point blocked. Those points proved to be the difference in the game.
Oklahoma MVP: Wide receiver Sterling Shepard is becoming one of the best wide outs in the country, and he put up monster numbers (15 catches, 197 yards, 1 TD) that kept his team in the game.
Kansas State MVP: Quarterback Jake Waters did everything head coach Bill Snyder could have wanted him to in this game. He was productive through the air (225 yards passing, 2 TDs) and on the ground (51 yards rushing, 1 TD) without turning the ball over.
What’s Next? Oklahoma has fallen to 5-2 on the season and has likely dropped out of the College Football Playoff picture. On the flip side, the Wildcats have probably forced themselves into the top-10. The Sooners have a bye week to regroup, while Kansas State faces Texas at home next weekend.
