2015's National Signing Day is over, and the Sooners are already looking ahead to next season. Bob Stoops has already identified his top targets in the 2016 recruiting class, and these are the five players OU fans should get to know before they become household names:
5. DE Rahshaun Smith
Smith attends Florida's IMG Academy, a bona fide assembly line for top college talent. He has some room to grow at 6'3/225, but he's quick and powerful enough already to embarrass most high school tackles coming off the edge. Clemson, FSU, Penn State and Florida are all in the hunt, but the Sooners are definitely on his shortlist at the moment.
4. WR Devin Duvernay
The #5 receiver in the Class of '16 is looking at several schools ahead of the Sooners, but he's a high priority for OU and there's plenty of time for that to change. Duvernay doesn't have exceptional size at 5'11, but his speed and hands more than make up for a few vertical inches. He's also a tremendous all-around athlete, and can contribute to his future college team in a number of ways.
3. OLB/DE Erick Fowler
A versatile OLB who needs to add some weight if he's going to be a college DE, Fowler is a Texas native who looks like he'll choose between OU and the Longhorns. He had 75 tackles as a junior this past fall, with 17 going for a loss and 12.5 total sacks.
2. QB Shane Buechele
The #3 dual-threat quarterback in the Class of '16, Buechele has been a high priority for Bob Stoops for quite a while now. His 2014 season led to a lot more interest, and it isn't hard to see why - he completed 67% of his passes, racking up 2492 passing yards with 30 TDs and 6 INTs...and he also rushed 85 times for 572 yards (6.7 ypc average) and 7 TDs. Stanford and Texas are also in the picture, but OU is his clear leader at the moment.
1. OLB Caleb Kelly
Kelly is a 5-Star from all the way out in Fresno, California, but he's a near lock to end up with the Sooners. An exceptional athlete with a fantastic motor, Kelly is one of the most disruptive defensive players we've seen in a long time. His potential is off the charts, and we can see him making an immediate impact as a true freshman if he stays on track.
