In this breaking Oklahoma football news update, bowl officials have confirmed that the Oklahoma Sooners have accepted an invite to play in the Russell Athletic Bowl on December 29th in Orlando, Florida.
The Sooners will face an as-of-yet unnamed ACC opponent in the bowl. The ACC has not announced its bowl destinations as of this writing.
Oklahoma started the season as the #4-ranked team in the Associated Press poll, but a litany of injuries and struggles led to an 8-4 finish for the Sooners - good for just 4th place in the Big 12 during this 2014 college football season.
Per Ryan Aber of NewsOK.com, "the Big 12 tie-in is in its first year. Current Big 12 teams have played in the bowl five times previously, with three of those by West Virginia."
West Virginia lost all three of those matchups, with Texas Tech (2003) the lone Big 12 team to have secured a victory in the bowl (back when it was called the Mazda Tangerine Bowl).
