The #19 Oklahoma Sooners manhandled the Kansas State Wildcats in a 55-0 victory on Saturday, improving to 5-1. With that being said, here's 5 Things We've Learned About Oklahoma Through 6 Games.
5. The Defense Has The Talent...
...now they need the consistency. After getting shredded by Texas on the ground, Oklahoma's front seven tightened up something fierce against KSU. The pass defense was just as good, as OU's defense smothered the Wildcats for the majority of this one. Granted, this came against a depleted Wildcats offense. But, there still was major progress on Saturday.
4. Sterling Shepard Is One Of The Game's Elite Receivers
Other wide receivers may get more national publicity that Shepard, but there isn't a more consistent big-play target in all college football. QB Baker Mayfield has a penchant for spreading the ball around, but he knows where his bread is buttered. Shepard caught two touchdown passes on Saturday while opening up opportunties for other receivers by drawing defensive backs towards him.
3. Oklahoma Is On The Level Of Baylor And TCU
This is an easy one. Coming into the season, most experts separated Baylor and TCU from the Big 12 pack thanks to a pair of dynamic, stretch-out-defenders-to-death offenses. Don't look now, but Oklahoma is just as good as those two teams -- regardless of what was a tough rivalry game last week. The defense needs some polishing, but that's the case for Baylor and TCU as well.
2. Baker Mayfield Is Elite
We're buying on Mayfield big time. Mayfield torched the Wildcats for 282 yards and five passing touchdowns (all in the first half), perplexing the KSU secondary time and time again with great throw after great throw. This kid's something special.
1. If This Oklahoma Team Shows Up For The Rest Of The Year...
...the Big 12 title is in reach. Oklahoma still has games left against TCU and Baylor. If Mayfield leads this juggernaut into those two games, OU can take down the Horned Frogs and Bears and assert themselves as the class of the conference heading into bowl season.
