After the Oklahoma Sooners' dominating 44-24 victory over the West Virginia Mountaineers, we're convinced that OU quarterback Baker Mayfield BELONGS in the Heisman Trophy conversation. Forget the other hyped contenders. Here's 3 Reasons Why Baker Mayfield Is Our Heisman Trophy Favorite.
1. Piling Up The Stats
After Saturday's game, Mayfield has 1,382 yards passing and 13 touchdowns over four games. If he was playing for Texas Tech, people would clap and say "good job!" However, Mayfield is playing for OKLAHOMA and will be able to showcase his wares and gaudy stats on a national stage each and every week. If he keeps connecting on massive plays over 50 yards almost every game, his Arena-Football-like box scores will get him the Heisman. No question.
2. The Eye Test
How many quarterbacks can complete just 56% of their passes in a game and STILL elicit several WOWs over the course of 60 minutes? Mayfield went 14-of-25 against West Virginia, but those 14 passes went for a staggering 320 yards. That's just under 23 yards per completion! Yes, he threw a pick and struggled with consistency on short throws, but the Heisman is all about making voters' jaws drop with highlight reel play after highlight reel play. Mayfield did that on Saturday, making it the 4th week in a row he's done so.
3. Leader Of The Nation's Scariest Offense
Let's be real here -- if you're the man at Oklahoma (especially for an undefeated Sooners team), you're a Heisman Trophy contender. That's just plain fact. However, what's even more impressive is that Mayfield is the engine for an office that is currently 42 points per game. The running game has been fine and dandy, but it's Mayfield's 10 touchdowns and general poise in the pocket and out of it that has OU thinking national title right now. TCU and Baylor get all the publicity as Big 12 shootout artists. The real Wild Wild West (Heisman) winner, though, resides in Norman.
