Thunder guard Russell Westbrook has won the season long NBA Cares Community Assist Award, The Oklahoman has learned.
An official announcement will be made Tuesday night, with Westbrook being presented with the David Robinson Plaque from NBA Deputy Commissioner Mark Tatum at the NBA Draft Lottery in New York City.
The Community Assist Award recognizes the NBA player who best represents the league’s efforts toward giving back to the community.
Through his Why Not? Foundation, Westbrook opened “Russell’s Reading Rooms,” in three Oklahoma City public schools this season. The reading centers provided children with 1,200 books to read in safe environments and challenged students to read more.
