Is Cameron Payne an NBA starting point guard?

The Thunder traded for the Bulls’ Doug McDermott and Taj Gibson on Thursday. McDermott, a third-year sharpshooter from Creighton, figures to be in OKC awhile. He’s got one more season left on his contract and then become a restricted free agent, which means the Thunder can match any contract he might sign. Gibson, an eight-year classic power forward, is a free agent this summer; he might be a rental player, a guy who is only here the rest of the season, but Gibson also could be a candidate to be re-signed, since the Thunder will be strapped by the payroll cap and can really be in the market for high-priced players only if they were on the OKC roster at the end of the 2016-17 season.
