Oklahoma City Thunder superstar Kevin Durant is set to become a free agent after next season when the salary cap is supposed to increase exponentially with money from the league's new TV deal, meaning more money will be offered to him than any other free agent in NBA history. Which teams are most likely to sign him?
3) Brooklyn Nets
Brooklyn is in salary cap hell next year with Joe Johnson and Deron Williams making well over $20 million a year, but Johnson's contract will be off the books in 2016. Add in the influx of cash, and the Nets will have plenty of money to sign him and another marquee superstar.
Why is Brooklyn a bigger possibility than most other teams? Durant is represented by Jay-Z's Roc Nation Sports, and Jay-Z used to be part owner of the Nets. Maybe he'll give Durant a push towards Brooklyn?
2) Washington Wizards
While the idea of Brooklyn is nice, there really are only two teams that have a shot at landing Durant, one of which is his hometown Washington Wizards. When LeBron James announced he was returning to Cleveland, Durant made public comments about how much he liked the idea about "going home".
The Wizards already have a rabid grassroots "Come Home KD" campaign and one of the best young backcourts in the game with John Wall and Bradley Beal. If he decides he can't win a championship with the Thunder, or if he's just in love with the idea of playing in his hometown, the Wizards become a very appealing option.
1) Oklahoma City Thunder
Washington may be a true threat to land Durant, but the Oklahoma City Thunder are the obvious favorites. Not only does he have a strong sense of loyalty to the franchise (he recently said he wants to retire as a member of the Thunder), but OKC can offer him more money than anyone else. Throw in Russell Westbrook and the possibility to add another superstar with the salary cap increase, and Oklahoma City just makes too much sense.
