The Ohio State Buckeyes and Urban Meyer often land some of the best players in the nation. One player they didn't land in the class of 2016 was four-star offensive tackle Landon Young, a top-100 recruit. According to Young, it was Meyer and Ohio State's treatment of him that ensured he wouldn't go to Ohio State.
In a story from SEC Country, Young claimed Urban Meyer that Meyer ignored Young until other schools started to show interest. At a camp Young went to, he claims he wasn't treated well.
"I had gone up to camp there, and they had treated me like a piece of meat, just treated me like crap," Young said. "By that time, I was a four-star tackle. I weighed about 270 [pounds], and I was 6-foot-7."
When Young asked Meyer why he only just received an offer, Meyer claims it was because Ohio State looked at Young's tape. Young told Meyer that he has been to an Ohio State camp and sent tape to the program, with no interest. At that point Meyer called both Young and Kentucky "insubstantial."
"He said, ‘Well, if you look back at that time, you were how big?’ I said, ‘6-7, 270, just like I am now.’" Young told SEC Country. "He said, ‘Well, you were an insubstantial tackle, an insubstantial player.’ So he was saying I (didn’t) even amount to being able to be recruited by Ohio State as a four-star tackle. He said, ‘Now what offers did you have?’ I said, ‘I had my one from Kentucky,’ and he said, ‘Well, you were an insubstantial player with insubstantial offers from an insubstantial school.’"
Young took offense to Meyer's comments. Download the Chat Sports App for more college football coverage.
"That sort of put me on a bad note because that’s the team I’m committed to," Young said. "He called me a bad player at that. That doesn’t usually sit well with kids. I may not have been the best, but saying I was an insubstantial player sort of hit me the wrong way."
Young was the No. 79 overall recruit in the class of 2017 on 247Sports' composite rankings. He was the No. 6 OT in the nation and the No. 1 player from Kentucky. 247Sports had him as a five-star recruit and the No. 12 overall recruit. 247Sports reports that Young did have an offer from Ohio State. He is the top player in UK's 2016 class.
