The Ohio State Buckeyes are only a few weeks removed from National Signing Day, but the Buckeyes are already working on their 2017 recruiting class. OSU started its work on the 2017 before the 2016 class was finalized, but that's something every program in the nation does. The Buckeyes are hoping to once again land several highly-touted recruits this year.
Ohio State and head coach Urban Meyer would love nothing more than to put together a class consisting entirely of top 50 recruits. But that's just not how recruiting works. The Buckeyes may have offered a Top 10 recruit, but that doesn't mean they have a realistic shot at landing that player. The five names on this list are the highest rated recruits that have a shot at ending up in Columbus next season. As it turns out, they all happen to be five-star recruits. A big tip of the hat to 247Sports, as their composite rankings and Crystal Ball forecast were used. With that in mind, here are the 5 Highest Rated 2017 Recruits Ohio State Could Actually Land.
WR Trevon Grimes - No. 12 overall
Grimes is the first of five five-star recruits the Buckeyes have a real shot at landing. He's the No. 2 WR in the class of 2017 and is the No. 4 player from Florida. He's attended a pair of Buckeyes' camps and Ohio State is the front-runner. The Florida Gators will also make a run at Grimes. Grimes went to the same high school as Nick and Joey Bosa.
CB Shaun Wade - No. 11 overall
Wade is actually the first of two recruits to already commit to Ohio State. But with so much time left before Wade can enroll, he still counts. High school kids often change their minds, and the Buckeyes will need to continue to recruit Wade to get him to attend Ohio State. He committed last January, but LSU and Florida are pursuing the No. 3 CB in the nation hard. There's no guarantee the Buckeyes will end up landing the No. 3 player from Florida.
S Jeffrey Okudah - No. 9 overall
There isn't a higher rated safety in the nation than Okudah. He's the No. 2 player from Texas and it will be a hard-fought battle for him. The Buckeyes are the current front-runner, but Baylor, Stanford and a host of others are also in the mix. For more Ohio State recruiting news, download the Chat Sports Android and iPhone app.
WR Donovan Peoples-Jones - No. 4 overall
Much like Okudah, it will be a battle for Peoples-Jones. He's the No. 1 WR and the top player from Michigan, so it's no surprise that several Big Ten teams are trying to land him. Michigan, Michigan State and Ohio State are all in the mix, but it's far too early and close to declare one team the favorite. Peoples-Jones did attend the Buckeyes' Junior Day at the end of January.
OT Josh Myers - No. 3 overall
It's not often a top three recruit commits two full years before his signing day, but that's what happened with Myers. He committed to Ohio State in January 2015 and has taken multiple visits to Ohio State since. Like Wade, it's not a sure Myers heads to Ohio State, but the Buckeyes should be feeling confident about landing the top tackle and top player from Ohio.
