As a child, Katie Matheny was taught one thing about college sports: to hate Ohio State.
The daughter of University of Michigan athletes (her father played baseball; her mother, field hockey) and the lone sister to four brothers grew up surrounded by sports.
Her father, Mike Matheny, played professional baseball for 13 years. (The native of Reynoldsburg has managed the St. Louis Cardinals since 2012.)
Katie, however, bucked the family tradition.
As a Buckeye and an emerging offensive star on the OSU women’s ice hockey team, she has given her father a reason to cheer for the enemy.
