Over many years Ohio State coach Woody Hayes had developed a ground and pound offense featuring the fullback in the T formation. His other option was usually to run a halfback off tackle. So why did Woody Hayes recruit Archie Griffin, a 5’9” 180 pound running back. Because he realized Griffin was a boy who had great character as well as talent.
In fact, when the two went to dinner, coach Hayes discussed everything but football with Archie. Because of that conversation, when Griffin got home he told his parents he didn’t think coach Hayes wanted him at Ohio State.
