U.S. Senior Open notebook | Ohio State's Sindelar in tie for seventh after shooting 69

A smiling Joey Sindelar looked almost sheepish about his opening round Thursday at Scioto Country Club.

After birdieing three of the first six holes, the Ohio State graduate bogeyed the next two and needed to make some difficult putts on the final three holes to finish tied for seventh at 1-under-par 69. It marked his best opening round in the U.S. Senior Open since 2009, where he finished second, but it didn’t come easily.

“You can hold it together in spurts, five or six holes at a time, but all of a sudden you play that seventh hole or hit that one shot and you’re looking around going, ‘OK, let’s minimize the damage,’ “ Sindelar said.
