Still a nut; Brutus Buckeye turns 50

Brutus Buckeye is no stranger to the celebrity makeover.

He wasn’t always the svelte — if large-skulled — figure who roams the sidelines nowadays.

The mascot has morphed.

On Saturday, Ohio State will celebrate his 50th anniversary during the home football game against Minnesota.

Sally Lanyon and Ray Bourhis are credited with creating the first Brutus in 1965, as OSU students. They will give a talk and sign copies of their book The Autobiography of Brutus Buckeye (Orange Frazer, 63 pages, $19.95) at 6:30 Thursday at Barnes & Noble, 1739 Olentangy River Rd.
