Ohio State Wrestling Opens Season with 24-12 Upset Win over No. 3 Virginia Tech

Ohio State wrestling opened its season in impressive fashion.

The Buckeyes took down the No. 3-ranked team in the country in their own arena on Friday night, earning a 24-12 victory over Virginia Tech at the Cassell Coliseum in Blacksburg, Virginia.

Ohio State took six of the night’s 10 bouts with five different Buckeyes defeating higher-ranked wrestlers and three Buckeyes earning bonus points to propel the scarlet and gray to victory.

The biggest upset came in the night’s opening match when redshirt freshman Brendan McCrone earned an 11-3 major decision over Virginia Tech’s Eddie Ventresca, the fourth-ranked wrestler at 125 pounds, to give the Buckeyes an early 4-0 lead.
