Ohio State men’s basketball: Matta likes timing of 30-second shot clock

Thad Matta is not a patient person when it comes to basketball. The Ohio State coach prefers to keep his practices short and intense and doesn’t gladly waste time on the court or in the locker room.

His arrival in the Big Ten 11 years ago provided a wake-up call.

“When I came into this league, you had (Bill) Carmody at Northwestern and he was begging for a minute shot clock and (Wisconsin’s) Bo Ryan was playing slow,” he told fans at an Oct.13 Agonis Club fundraiser. “I couldn’t take it. I’m too impatient.”

It’s a welcome change for Matta, then, that the NCAA has aligned itself with his wishes.
