When it comes to throwing the ball, nobody in the American Athletic Conference is as prolific as Tulsa quarterback Dane Evans. At 333.2 yards per game last season, the senior is the league’s leading returning passer and part of one of the nation’s most dangerous aerial attacks.
But even with those numbers and two receivers boasting 1,000-yard seasons, the Golden Hurricane’s biggest offensive hope in coach Philip Montgomery’s second season is for D’Angelo Brewer and his fellow running backs to carry more of the load.
One week into the season, things are looking up. In a 45-10 victory over San Jose State in the opener, Tulsa topped 500 yards of total offense for the eighth time in 14 games, and did so by pounding the ball 58 times for 305 yards rushing.
