Shelley Meyer picked up the phone that morning in 1996, heard who was calling, and immediately began crying in sadness.
Thus began the Notre Dame chapter of Urban and Shelley Meyer’s lives.
Urban Meyer’s time with the Fighting Irish lasted five years and was his last as an assistant coach. It was the final stop before he launched his head-coaching career. Now, that career comes full circle as Meyer’s Ohio State Buckeyes face Notre Dame in the Fiesta Bowl on Friday.
Meyer’s career would have taken a different path if not for that phone call from then-Notre Dame coach Lou Holtz almost 20 years ago.
