Ohio State football notebook | Assistants linked to head-coaching jobs

Should the search for a new coach at the University of Cincinnati move from the established head coaching experience phase to a promising assistant, at least three members of the Ohio State staff could be in the running, insiders tell The Dispatch.

Defensive coordinator Luke Fickell, offensive coordinator Ed Warinner and cornerbacks coach/special teams coordinator Kerry Coombs, who has strong ties to the Cincinnati area, are said to be possibilities. And defensive co-coordinator Greg Schiano, who has been linked as a man of interest for the Oregon job, also could be in the mix at Cincinnati, which is widely considered to be the second-best major-college post in the state behind Ohio State.
