Tulsa’s trip on Oct. 22, 1983, started like most every other of that era, John Cooper recalled.
“We got up, had breakfast, got on a plane and flew to Lubbock to play at Texas Tech," said Cooper, Tulsa's coach at the time.
After resting at the team hotel for a few hours, the Golden Hurricane "went out that night and beat 'em 59-20 — I think it’s still the most points Texas Tech has ever given up at home — and then we got back on the plane and flew home,” Cooper said.
He told the anecdote while barely taking a breath and laughing at points.
