Jim Herbstreit, a captain of the 1960 Ohio State football team, died Thursday in Cleveland, said his son Kirk Herbstreit, an ESPN analyst and a former OSU quarterback.
He was 77.
Jim Herbstreit had been diagnosed with Alzheimer’s disease a couple of years ago, according to his son, but he “died suddenly this morning,” Kirk Herbstreit told The Dispatch. “It’s a tough day for my family and I.”
He and his father were the second of three father-son duos to be named captains at Ohio State. Kirk Herbstreit gained the honor in 1992. The first had been Jim Davidson and Jeff Davidson.
