NORMAN, Okla. — The lasting image of the epic 1977 game between Ohio State and Oklahoma is that of Sooners kicker Uwe von Schamann waving his hands as he led the Ohio Stadium crowd in chants of “Block that kick!”
John Croyle remembers hands waving that day, as well, though it wasn’t the German-born kicker stoking the Ohio Stadium crowd before his game-winning field goal in the final seconds.
“I remember what happened a few plays before the field goal,” the 60-year-old Croyle recalled this week. “I remember it like it was yesterday.”
Ohio State’s game at Oklahoma on Saturday night was the third meeting between the traditional powers.
