The Big Ten women’s basketball coaches and media selected Ohio State sophomore point guard Kelsey Mitchell as preseason conference player of the year.
A co-conference player and freshman-of-the-year in 2014-15, Mitchell led the nation in scoring at 24.9 points per game and set an NCAA single-season record with 129 three-point field goals.
Mitchell is joined on the 10-player coaches’ and media preseason first team by senior teammate Ameryst Alston. Alston is a two-time, first-team all-conference guard.
Both voting blocs selected defending conference Maryland as the favorite to win the league. The Buckeyes were second in the polls.
