Steve Pontrello had four goals and two assists to lead North Carolina to a 13-9 win over Notre Dame in a Division I NCAA men's lacrosse quarterfinal in Ohio Stadium.
The Tar Heels (10-6) never trailed and built a nine-goal advantage in the second half before the Irish (11-4) rallied late. Goalie Brian Balkam had a career-high with 14 saves for the Tar Heels. With the win, North Carolina advances to its first national semifinal since 1993.
In the other quarterfinal at OSU, Loyola (Md.) posted a 10-8 victory over Towson (15-3). Pat Spencer and Zach Sirico each had three goals for Loyola (14-3), which will face North Carolina in the semis in Philadelphia on Saturday.
