An upgrade in the immigration status of Ohio State diver Colin Zeng, reigning NCAA men's platform diving champion, isn’t enough to keep alive his hopes to compete for the United States this August in the Rio de Janeiro Olympic Games.
Steve Foley, high performance director at USA Diving, told The Dispatch today that Zeng must be a U.S. citizen in order to participate in the U.S. Olympic Diving Trials, which begin Saturday in Indianapolis.
Zeng, born and raised in China, had lived in the U.S. since 2010 on a student visa before last week, when he was approved for an immigration visa petition that essentially means he’s able to apply for a green card.
