Men's basketball | Surgery shelves Florida center John Egbunu

The Florida basketball team will be shorthanded when it comes to Value City Arena on Sunday for a second-round NIT game against Ohio State.

After the Gators defeated North Florida 97-68 on Tuesday night, coach Mike White said sophomore center John Egbunu will undergo season-ending surgery to repair a torn ligament in a thumb.

The 6-foot-11 Egbunu posted his sixth double-double of the season against the Ospreys, finishing with 13 points and 10 rebounds. He is Florida’s second-leading scorer (11.5 points per game) and rebounder (6.5) and started 30 of 34 games. Egbunu has played with the injury for the past three games.
