Capital announced on its athletics website that men's basketball coach Damon Goodwin will take a leave of absence from his coaching duties and begin treatment for hairy cell leukemia, a rare but highly treatable cancer of the blood.
The treatment will continue for several months, and Goodwin is expected to return to the program when he is healthy.
Second-year assistant coach Andy Winters has been named interim head coach.
"First and foremost, our thoughts and prayers are with Damon and his family as they prepare to take on this challenge," Capital athletic director Steve Bruning said in a statement.
