College sports | Appeals court strikes down possible payments to NCAA athletes

SAN FRANCISCO -- A federal appeals court ruled today that the NCAA's use of college athletes' names, images and likenesses in video games and TV broadcasts violated antitrust laws but struck down a plan allowing schools to pay athletes up to $5,000.

The 9th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals said the NCAA couldn't stop schools from providing full scholarships to student athletes but vacated a proposal for deferred cash payments.
