Ryan Reffitt thought he was going to have one of the best vantage points at Falcon Stadium for Air Force’s season opener against Morgan State. As the backup tight end, he would watch from the sideline.
During warmups, though, Reffitt knew his job description had changed when senior Garrett Griffin began to limp. Position coach Steed Lobotzke didn’t have to tell Reffitt to begin running plays with the first team.
“I saw the injury happen,” said Reffitt, a sophomore from Hilliard Bradley. “I was it, and that was it. There were no other tight ends.”
Another player about to play in his first college game might have panicked.
