The college football season doesn't start for roughly another month and a half, giving the Ohio State Buckeyes plenty of time to focus on recruiting. They have taken advantage of that time, and it's already paid off with 14 commitments - but the Buckeyes are far from done. Here are the latest news and rumors surrounding Ohio State football recruiting.
Tate Martell recruiting other Ohio State targets
The Buckeyes picked up their projected quarterback of the future when Tate Martell (Las Vegas, NV), the top-rated dual threat quarterback in the country, announced his commitment, and he's now doing more work for Ohio State. According to Bill Kurelic of 247sports, Martell was heavily recruiting other prospects at The Opening earlier this month:
Martell’s performance has been dissected, but what hasn’t been talked about as much was the recruiting work of Martell in Oregon. We know Martell was working at least somewhat behind the scenes. I am told it was much more than that.
One of the Buckeye commits at The Opening told me he was working on a couple of the Ohio State targets in Oregon. But this future Buckeye said in regards to recruiting he left the heavy lifting to Martell, and was glad to do so. It wasn’t that this Ohio State commitment didn’t want to do his part, he definitely did. But as the commit said, “Tate is really good at that stuff, he communicates with all those guys, and he was all over it.”
There were at least nine Ohio State targets at the event, including the No. 1 receiver in the nation in Donovan Peoples-Jones (Detroit, MI).
2018 4-star S to visit, commit?
Jaiden Woodbey, a 2018 four-star safety from Upland, CA, was supposed to attend Ohio State's Friday Night Lights camp with teammate and Buckeyes commit Wyatt Davis. However, Davis is no longer attending the event, leaving Woodbey's status in question:
“Wyatt can’t go because it’s his grandpa’s birthday this weekend,” Woodbey said. “But I asked my 7-on-7 coach if he can go. If he can go then I’ll be there. We would fly out on Friday.”
According to 247sports, Woodbey could commit to Ohio State if he makes the visit:
Last week Woodbey did not rule out the possibility of committing to Ohio State this weekend if he were to make the trip. Woodbey did not say he was thinking about committing to the Buckeyes, just that when he finds the right place he will make his decision.
The 6'2", 205-pounder is ranked as the No. 3 safety and No. 31 overall prospect in the 2018 class.
