The Ohio State Buckeyes are just one week away from the start of the regular season, but that doesn't mean they've let up on the recruiting trail - in fact, it has been the exact opposite. Here's all the latest Ohio State recruiting news and rumors you need to know:
Ohio State in top five for 5-star DB
Derrick Allen, a 2018 five-star defensive back from Marietta, GA, hasn't named his favorite schools yet, but according to Bill Kurelic of 247sports, Ohio State is right at the top of his list.
Allen later told me he would be attending the Ohio State-Nebraska game and planned to fly to Columbus early and spend all day Saturday here in the Capital City for the 8:00 pm game before leaving on Sunday morning. He will make the trip with his father.
Allen tells me he is currently talking to Meyer and Coombs every Sunday.
Allen currently has 33 scholarship offers including in addition to the Buckeyes, Alabama, Clemson, Georgia, Florida State, Tennessee, Florida and Michigan.
“They are very high,” Allen said when asked where Ohio State would be on his list. “If I did a Top 5 they would be in. Ohio State, Georgia, Clemson stand out right now. I’m still exploring some others though before I narrow down to a Top 10. (I) plan to do so this fall/winter.”
The 6'1", 185-pounder is ranked as the No. 2 cornerback and No. 18 overall prospect in the 2018 class.
Buckeyes on top for 4-star DT
2018 our-star defensive tackle Matthew Jones (Brooklyn, NY) currently has 18 offers, but one school is sticking out to him - Ohio State:
"Right now it’s Ohio State standing out to me," he stated. "They contact me the most and they keep me updated with everything they have going on. They want to see me shine and they show me the most love. Rutgers would probably be next, they're up there too. They're showing me a decent amount of love."
He was on campus for Friday Night Lights this summer, which helped put the Buckeyes at the top of his list.
"I saw players out there motivating each other and it motivated me. They told me if I work hard I could be there, and I could do it. They said anyone could be a Buckeye if they put their mind to it.
"It was good being with [offensive line] coach [Greg] Stud[rawa]. He showed us the ropes. He showed me some tips on footwork. He said just do everything sharp and always go at it aggressive, give 100% every time. I can most definitely see myself playing for him one day."
Jones is ranked as the No. 5 defensive tackle and No. 48 overall prospect in the 2018 class.
