The Ohio State Buckeyes are left with just three quarterbacks on their roster - Dwayne Haskins, Tate Martell, and Matthew Baldwin - following Joe Burrow's decision to transfer earlier this week, but Ohio State is hoping that won't be the case next year.
According to Bucknuts' Bill Kurelic, Ohio State has ramped up their efforts to land a quarterback in the 2019 recruiting class.
The Buckeyes don’t have a 2019 quarterback commitment, but Ohio State co-offensive coordinator Ryan Day is recruiting coast-to-coast to change that. The two most likely possibilities right now would seem to be Grant Gunnell or flipping Michigan State commitment Dwan Mathis. The staff hosted Wisconsin quarterback commitment Graham Mertz on Monday and he would be a great addition to the Ohio State quarterback room, but I don’t see him changing his mind.
Gunnell (Houston, TX) is currently ranked as the No. 3 pro-style quarterback and No. 96 overall prospect in the country, according to the 247sports Composite. The Buckeyes are currently the favorite to land the 6-foot-6, 222-pounder while Arkansas, LSU, Oklahoma State are also believed to be in the mix.
Mathis (Belleview, MI) appears to be favoring Michigan State over the Buckeyes at this time, but they're still going hard after him. The 6-foot-5, 195-pounder is ranked as the No. 11 pro-style quarterback and No. 263 overall prospect in the country.
Burrow was competing for the starting job with Haskins and Martell in the spring before leaving the program. Though the competition is still close, many believe that Haskins is the slight favorite to win the job for the 2018 season.
