The 2016 edition of "The Game" was a thriller for the ages. No. 3 Michigan Wolverines and the No. 2 Ohio State Buckeyes went to overtime for the first time in history. In overtime, the Buckeyes completed a 10-point comeback to win 30-27.
Ohio State kicker Tyler Durbin, despite missing two earlier field goals, hit a short one just before the end of regulation to force overtime. In the first OT period, J.T. Barrett scored from seven yards out to make it 24-17. The Buckeyes took just two plays to score. Michigan moved the ball down to the 5-yard line, with Wilton Speight hitting WR Amara Darboh for the score on 4th down.
In the second OT period, Michigan was forced to settle for a field goal after going 3 and out. The Buckeyes went for it on 4th and 1 and narrowly converted. On the very next play, Curtis Samuel ran 15 yards for the winning score.
Michigan turnovers helped keep the Buckeyes in the game. QB Wilton Speight threw two interceptions that led to TDs, including a pick-six. He also fumbled on the goal line once, with Ohio State recovering.
J.T. Barrett was not great through the air, completing just 14 of 31 passes for 116 yards and a pick. But he was great on the ground, racking up 123 yards and a score on 27 carries.
Wilton Speight, a surprise start for Michigan at QB after missing last week with a shoulder injury, was inconsistent. Speight completed 23 of 35 passes for 219 yards, two TDs and two picks.
Michigan struck first, notching a field goal after Ohio State missed one of its own. The Buckeyes actually scored the first TD of the game, as Malik Hooker recorded a pick-six of Wilton Speight. But Michigan scored the next two touchdowns, both by Khalid Hill. He took a one-yard run in just before the half and then reeled in an 8-yard score following a failed Ohio State fake punt. But Ohio State would score a TD following a Speigh INT and then add a game-tying field goal in the final seconds of the fourth quarter.
