The Buckeyes certainly didn't make it easy for themselves, but J.T. Barrett's stellar performance helped Ohio State leave Minneapolis with a 31-24 win over the Minnesota Golden Gophers.
Turning Point:
This one came down to the wire thanks to Ohio State's sloppy play, but the Buckeyes held off Minnesota's late comeback bid. The game was finally iced when Ohio State recovered an onside kick attempt with just over a minute remaining.
OSU MVP:
It's crazy to think that just a few months ago, people thought Ohio State's offense would be in shambles without Braxon Miller in charge. J.T. Barrett hasn't just exceeded expectations, he's carried the Buckeyes offense in several key games this year, and he did it again in Minneapolis today. After personally accounting for 86% of Ohio State's offensive yardage in the first half, he kept the heat on after the break on his way to 387 total yards and four touchdowns. Barrett had 198 through the air on 15/25 passing with three touchdowns and an interception, and a blistering 86-yard TD run helped him pick up 189 on the ground.
"Only In Minnesota" Award:
We have to give some special recognition to this Minnesota assistant, who wouldn't let a little snowstorm keep him from enjoying an ice cream bar:
Stat of the Day:
The Buckeyes had 352 yards of offense at halftime to Minnesota's 133...but the Buckeyes only had a three-point lead because of Minnesota's points off turnovers. If the Buckeyes want to make a real impression on the playoff committee, they need to take better care of the ball.
What's Next?
Ohio State is now 9-1, and will have two games left against unranked teams (Indiana and Michigan) to impress the playoff selection committee. Minnesota will face #16 Nebraska next weekend as they try to position themselves for the best bowl game possible.
