Oregon's high-powered offense was on display early as they scored on their first drive just 2:39 into the game, but Ohio State responded with two long drives to take a 14-7 lead after the first quarter. The defenses took control in the second quarter until the Buckeyes broke through again with under five minutes to play. It looked like Ohio State would maintain control until halftime, but the Ducks answered with a field goal right before halftime.
Biggest Play:
Ohio State stopped Oregon on a 4th-and-goal that would've tied the game early in the second quarter. Instead, the Buckeyes were able to take control of the game.
Biggest Surprise:
Oregon's ineffectiveness on third down was extremely surprising. The Ducks converted on 51.6 percent of third downs coming into the game, but so far are 2/8 tonight. On the flip side, Ohio State is 5/8 on third down.
Oregon Key Player:
Quarterback Marcus Mariota showed why he's the best player in the country, completing 18/23 passes in the half for 189 yards and a touchdown while rushing for 24 more yards.
Ohio State Key Player:
Running back Ezekiel Elliot repeatedly gashed the Oregon defense early and often in this one, rushing for 98 yards and a touchdown on just 11 carries. Quarterback Cardale Jones also outplayed Mariota in the half, passing for 171 yards and a touchdown while rushing for 48 more and another TD.
Who Has The Edge?
Ohio State. The Buckeyes have been moving the ball at will offensively and their defense has kept Mariota & Co. in check. If they didn't turn the ball over twice, this one could be a blowout.
