With Ohio’s star tandem of point-guard Jaaron Simmons and big-man Antonio Campbell struggling to stay on the court due to foul trouble, the Bobcats relied on its newfound depth to defeat the Southern University Jaguars 77-67 in Saturday’s season opener at the Convocation Center.
Simmons committed four turnovers and three personal fouls in his frustrating 14 minutes of first half action. His absence allowed freshman Rodney Culver to steal the show in his Bobcat debut with nine points on four of five shooting and a sticky perimeter defense.
“Rodney [Culver] brought some juice to the building tonight there’s no question about that,” Ohio coach Saul Phillips said in the postgame.
