A’s starter Daniel Mengden had surgery Wednesday in Houston to repair a broken bone in his right foot, taking the right-hander out of the running for the team’s fifth-starter spot.
Mengden, who turns 24 on Feb. 19, incurred a fracture of the medial tibial sesamoid bone during a bullpen session on Jan. 31, according to the A’s. Dr. Kevin Varner performed the surgery, which involved the removal of the sesamoid bone.
Mengden will be in a walking boot for six weeks and the A’s did not provide a timetable for his return to baseball activity.
