A’s reliever R.J. Alvarez underwent arthroscopic surgery for removal of bone chips in his right elbow Tuesday, described by the club through manager Bob Melvin as successful.
The surgery, performed by team orthopedist Dr. Jon Dickinson in San Francisco, was described technically as a debridement of the right elbow.
There’s no timetable for Alvarez to return, although typically a pitcher will not throw for two or three weeks following surgery, then will have to go through a full buildup of his arm, so he won’t be available anytime soon.
The hard-throwing Alvarez, 24, was up with the A’s four times last season, getting into 21 games with a 9.
