SCOTTSDALE, Ariz. - Sonny Gray was so sharp and efficient in his first spring training start that he didn’t get a chance to throw any sliders.
He made sure to toss a few in his second start Tuesday.
Ineffectively, as it turned out.
“I kept throwing them in the dirt, in the dirt, in the dirt,” Gray said. “I couldn’t really correct it.”
Gray pitched two scoreless innings last time. This time, he went two innings again but surrendered seven runs on five hits and four walks.
He threw three wild pitches, all on sliders past catcher Josh Phegley.
