Last winter, Ka’ai Tom set sail from Cleveland to the Oakland A’s. But this week he found himself back out at sea floating on waivers, and there he was picked up by the Pirates.
The A’s designated Tom for assignment on Tuesday, and he was claimed by the Pittsburgh Pirates on Wednesday, the team announced.
Tom came to Oakland as a Rule 5 draft pick over the offseason, meaning he needed to stay on the MLB roster and couldn’t be sent down to the minors. He did make the team out of spring but was eventually squeezed out after a slow April, sending him to the waiver wire.
