HOUSTON -- Athletics catcher Josh Phegley -- who was scratched from Friday's 4-3 win over the Astros -- suffered a freak injury during batting practice before the game and has a concussion, manager Bob Melvin said.
Melvin said Phegley was standing too close to the cage and was hit in the back of the head with a bat. When he was scratched about an hour before game time, the club officially said it was because of an "illness."
Phegley was at Minute Maid Park for Saturday's game, but Melvin said he could be unavailable for several days given he has to pass the concussion test before he would be cleared to play.
