ST. PETERSBURG -- A's catcher Josh Phegley received a cortisone shot in his sore right knee, leading the team to summon Matt McBride from Triple-A Nashville ahead of Friday's series opener against the Rays at Tropicana Field.
Phegley initially hurt his knee in Toronto last month but felt good enough to catch several games thereafter. Following his latest start behind the plate in Boston, however, he "had some significant discomfort in the back of his knee," team trainer Nick Paparesta said.
Phegley underwent an MRI on the A's Thursday off-day and received a cortisone injection that could potentially keep him out of this three-game series.
